The Canadian Media The True Face of Intolerance

The Canadian Media The True Face of Intolerance

Yesterday while monitoring activity about the federal election I came a cross a tweet Antonia Zerbisias who is a columnist for the Toronto Star, from what I can tell from her tweets and her articles she is not a fan of our current Prime Minister.  While I don’t fault her for this, as she is entitled to opinion.  I was caught off card by one tweet which she was making out as a negative it was a link to an Article in the Vancouver Sun titled Evangelical activists promoted to top jobs by Stephen Harper

What got me most was the fact that this is suppose to scare Canadians that supposedly this is something wrong with the Prime Minister  and both the tweet and the original article are considered to be acceptable, I have to wonder if the following Article with the same slant of negativity because of their political beliefs would of been allowed to be published

Buddhist promoted to top jobs by Stephen Harper
Former Iman promoted to top jobs by Stephen Harper
Former Rabbi promoted to top jobs by Stephen Harper

My guess is  that the answer would be no, because it would be seen as violating their freedom of religion and I bet you that if it was published it would be quickly brought before a Human Rights Tribunal, for hate speech.

My question why is the media allowed to be intolerant of Christians?  In fact this type of bias seems to be encouraged by mainstream media.
The answer is simple.  It is because we as Christians have allowed them to get away with it, and soem of us have even fell victim to their ploys and believe that there is something wrong with Christians being involved in political activity.  When in truth there is nothing nefarious, Christians have the right to participate in Government and politics as much as any other people group.  And yes it will influence their opinions on various topics and to deny it would be to lie.  Much in the same manner as being from a particular region or being in a particular socio-economic group will influence your opinions.  All these are part of the make up of who you are and each will influence your opinions.

Being a Christian should not be something that teh media make you feel ashamed of nor should it be something you hide.  As part of our 2011 Election Conversation we are encouraging you to let the politicians know you are a Christian and that this is a part of your life that influences your decision making as well we want you to to take a stand against the media call them out for ignoring Values issues write letters  to your local newspaper’s editor, attend all candidate debates, organize an all candidates meeting.

Engagement - Part 1 - Prayer

E-mail Print PDF

Christians need to engage in the political process, Christians are called to engage in the political process, in God’s word.    But how are we to engage in the political process.   This is the first in a Multi-Part blog series on Engaging in the Political Process.  As I examine this issue in detail I will be introducing some aspects of the Value Voters Alliance and how we are here to help engage Christians in the Political Process in reaching our goal to Create Christian Political Activists.

Area of Engagement One Prayer.

In the first few lines of 1 Timothy Chapter 2 Paul speaks to this issue.  And he tells us we need to

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,” 1 Tim 2 1-3

This is our primary way as Christians to engage in the Political Process by pray for “all who are in high places”   By prayer we can affect change.  By praying for those already in leadership and their salvation we could raise up Christian leaders without even ever casting a ballot.

For Christians already in public office our prayer needs to be that in every decision, vote, position etc. that they ask themselves which position would most glorify God.  When Christians are elected to higher office in Canada we find to often they succumb to pressure to put aside their religious convictions for the sake of political expediency.  We need to pray that they steadfast in their faith.

We need to pray that Godly Christians are raised up to run for political office, and that they are not deterred from their ethics and principles.   We need to pray that they get elected to office, we can have Christians running for every office in Canada but unless they get elected their voice will not be heard and will not be effective.

The media has been hostile to Christians in this country.  This is a form of religious persecution so please pray for the media is able to report fairly and in a non judgemental

Pray that organizations such as ours continue to grow in their encouragement and support for Canadian Christians.

About Us

E-mail Print PDF

What is Value Voters Alliance.

It is an non-partisan organization designed to promote political activism amongst Christian in Canada.  It’s goal is to help inform, train and equip Canadian Christians so they can be active participants in our democratic process so a Christian voice is heard and listened to in our democratic institutions.

It is a resource for Christians whether they are;
trying to organize a protest or rally,
writing letters to the editors or their political representatives or candidates
supporting a particular candidate in an election as part of a campaign team,
seeking public office themselves,
or just wanting to participate as a voter in an election

What Value Voters Alliance is not.

It is not a lobbying organization designed to influence politicians, there are many great Christian Organizations in Canada doing this already.  We hope to work with these groups, their members and supporters so that they can be political activists and not just a voice.

It is not a political party nor does it support one political party over another.  We believe that while the policies of certain political parties maybe more attractive to Christians, Christians should be a part of all political parties and have been.  I can think of Tommy Douglas a former Baptist Minister and founder of the NDP and how his view of a social Gospel influenced the beginnings of that movement, Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Former Liberal Prime Minister Lester Pearson who’s Methodist believes influenced his political ideology and concern for his fellow humans, and Conservative Cabinet Minister Stockwell Day who proudly and publically practices his Christian Faith 7 days a week and not just on Sundays.

Why is the Value Voters Alliance necessary?

Because though the Majority of Canadians would indicate they are Christian, this is not reflective of our politicians.  Issues of importance to Christians are not being debated, and when they are they are limited to hot button issues such as Abortion and Same Sex marriage etc.  We want to help Christians organize not just on these hot button issues but also to bring a Christian perspective in all areas of government.  An example of this is the upcoming Federal Budget while the details and merits of it will be debated, criticized or simply dismissed by our Federal MP’s,  political pundits, news media etc.  This will all be done outside a Christian perspective, which is one of Good Stewardship.

It wasn’t that long ago that politicians of all parties in Canada would proudly state what church they are members of in their election brochures and they would take pride in their Christianity and see it as an important part of who they were and why they should be voted for.  Today the anti-Christian voice (though the minority) is so loud and judgemental that politicians for the most part hide their beliefs.  It is time to create an opposing voice that would on the one hand be supportive and raise up politicians that are Christians so they can not be afraid of making a public profession and on the other hand hold them accountable for their actions from a Christian perspective.

Making Your Voice Heard

I have listened to many a Christian say they don't vote, and even more who have never actively participated in politics, one email correspondent recently stated that he doesn't know many Christians who are "excited" by politics.  And it is shameful that he is right.  In Romans 13 we are commended to submit to the civil authorities.  But this submission is not to be one of unconcern or not holding them accountable.  Every Christian in Canada should feel an obligation to vote and participate in our democratic processes at every level of government.

I have heard some Christians say they will not vote if they can't vote for a Christian, this is commendable and we as Christians should be voting for Christians, but don't vote because there isn't a Christian to vote for go out and find one, and find one before the election campaign starts.  If you can't find one run yourself.
